The recognition matters more than the specification here. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling they have been handed homework, which is why it is the default gift and why it is the pick when you do not know their setup.
Do the arithmetic before you assume it is expensive. A 52-week dated planner used all year is a per-week cost most buyers never work out, and it is usually smaller than the coffee they bought while shopping for it.

The engraving decision
Engraving is the fastest way to turn a good object into a specific gift, and it is irreversible in every sense. It cannot be returned, exchanged, regifted or corrected.
- Engrave for a retirement. The occasion is singular and the object is meant to be kept rather than used hard.
- Engrave for a graduation if you know the name as they use it professionally - which may not be the name you use.
- Do not engrave for a promotion at a company they may leave. Anything naming the employer ages badly and fast.
- Never engrave when you are not certain of the spelling. Obvious, and it still happens.
Why a twist mechanism, not a click

What to skip
- Anything with the company logo on it. They will get that from the company, and it stops being a gift the moment it becomes branding.
- A very expensive pen for somebody who does not write by hand. The ceremony lands, the object does not get used, and both of you know it.
