Dated or Undated Paper Planner?
Dated saves you a chore. Undated saves you from the calendar. Which matters more depends on when you are buying and who it is for.

The answer first
Buy dated if the year starts in January and you will start on day one. Buy undated for everything else - and always buy undated when it is a gift.
The comparison
| Dated | Undated | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup required | None. Open and use. | Write in the dates, roughly 20-30 minutes for a year |
| Can expire | Yes. A 2027 book is worthless in 2028. | No. It starts the day it is opened. |
| Duplicates a book they already bought | Very possible - many buy in October or November | No |
| Holidays and week numbers printed | Yes | No. There is nothing to print them against. |
| Mid-year start | Wastes the months already gone | No waste at all |
| Typical published paper weight | 80 gsm at best in our set, often unstated | 120 gsm on three of the five undated books we compared |
| Best for | January starters buying for themselves | Gifts, academic and fiscal years, restarts |

1. The safe gift for almost anyone
Moleskine Classic 12-Month 2027 Weekly Planner, Large
Week on the left, ruled notes on the right, and a cover the recipient will recognize before they open it.
#ad No live price right now. How this is funded
144 pages across 52 weeks is roughly a spread per week and very little else. That is the point: this is a calendar with room for notes, not a system that asks the recipient to adopt a method.
The recognition matters more than the specification here. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling they have been handed homework, which is why it is the default gift and why it is the pick when you do not know their setup.
Do the arithmetic before you assume it is expensive. A 52-week dated planner used all year is a per-week cost most buyers never work out, and it is usually smaller than the coffee they bought while shopping for it.

What it does well
- January to December 2027, so it is in season for the whole gifting window and the whole year after it.
- The ruled facing page absorbs people who take notes but do not keep a separate notebook.
- Hard cover, elastic closure, and a rear pocket, so it survives a bag.
What it does not
- Moleskine does not publish a paper weight for this planner, so fountain-pen users are buying blind.
- 144 pages means no daily space at all if the recipient wants a page per day.
Skip this: if they already run a system. A dated planner is the one gift that assumes you know how somebody plans, and planner people are particular. Buy them a pen instead.
2. Gifting without knowing when they will start
Moleskine Classic 12-Month Undated Weekly Planner, Large
The same weekly layout with the dates left blank, which quietly removes the worst risk in gifting a planner.
#ad No live price right now. How this is funded
A dated planner given in December has a deadline attached to it. If the recipient does not start on January 1 they are already behind, and if they already bought their own for 2027 your gift is dead on arrival.
Undated removes both problems at once. It also removes the one thing a dated planner does for free, which is the dates, so somebody has to write twelve months of them in.
This is the pick when you are buying for a person whose planning year does not start in January - teachers, students, anyone on a fiscal or academic calendar.

What it does well
- Cannot be made obsolete by the calendar, so it is safe to buy early and safe to give late.
- Does not collide with a planner they may have already bought for the year.
- Same familiar Moleskine object, so the gift still reads as a gift.
What it does not
- Somebody has to hand-write the dates, and some people find that a chore rather than a feature.
- No public paper weight.
Skip this: if the recipient is the sort of person who wants everything printed for them. Undated planners reward people who like filling things in, and irritate everyone else.
3. The best-presented planner under most gift budgets
Legend Planner, Undated, A5
Eco-leather hardcover, 120 gsm paper, three ribbons and a pen loop, in a size that fits a bag.
#ad No live price right now. How this is funded
This is the one that punches above its price band on presentation. Three ribbons and a pen loop on an A5 hardcover is specification you normally pay considerably more for.
120 gsm again, published, which puts it in the same paper class as the Clever Fox and well above the hardcover planners that decline to state a weight.
The pen loop is worth calling out because it changes the gift. A planner with a loop invites a pen alongside it, and a planner plus a pen reads as a considered pair rather than one item.

| Dating | Undated, weekly and monthlySource: Amazon listing - Legend Planner Undated A5 |
| Fittings | Eco-leather hardcover, pen loop, elastic band, three bookmarks, rear pocket, sticker sheetsSource: Amazon listing - Legend Planner Undated A5 |
What it does well
- 120 gsm paper in a genuinely portable A5 hardcover.
- Pen loop, so the obvious companion gift has somewhere to live.
- Undated, with monthly calendars the recipient dates themselves.
What it does not
- Bright colorways dominate the range, which narrows who it suits.
- The goal-setting sections are extensive; a pure calendar user will leave pages blank.
Skip this: if the recipient's taste is severe. The range leans decorative, and a plain black book is a safer gift for someone whose desk is all steel and gray.
The paper-weight gap is real
The second-to-last row in that table is the finding most buyers never encounter. Across the planners we compared, three undated books publish 120 gsm paper and not one dated book publishes anything above 80 gsm - with several publishing nothing at all.
If the person writes with a fountain pen or a marker, that gap is more important than the dating question. Heavier paper is the difference between a clean page and one you can read from the back. Paper and ghosting explains what those numbers do.
Timing decides more than preference
The calendar makes this decision for you more often than taste does.
- August to December. Dated books for the coming year are on the shelf and a January start is realistic. This is dated season.
- January. Still dated, but check the price - dated stock is discounted hard once the year has begun, and a book bought on January 20th has 49 weeks left in it.
- February to July. Undated, without much argument. A dated book bought in April is a book with a third of its pages already spent.
- Any time, as a gift. Undated. It cannot arrive expired and it cannot duplicate what they already bought.
The case people forget: a restart
If somebody abandoned a planner in March and wants to begin again in June, a dated book is actively hostile - it opens on months they did not use and it has half its pages spent. An undated one starts clean on the day they open it, which is exactly the thing a restart needs.
That is also the argument for a short 90-day undated run, which turns a restart into a low-stakes experiment rather than a nine-month commitment. See paper planners for ADHD, where that logic is worked through properly, and undated planners for the picks.
Questions people actually ask
Is a dated or undated planner better?
Dated if you are starting in January and buying for yourself. Undated for a mid-year start, a restart, an academic or fiscal year, and always for a gift.
What is the downside of an undated planner?
You write the dates in - roughly twenty to thirty minutes for a full year of weekly spreads - and you lose the printed holidays and week numbers.
Do undated planners have better paper?
In the set we compared, yes. Three undated books publish 120 gsm; no dated book publishes above 80 gsm and several publish nothing at all.
When should I buy a dated planner?
August through January. Buy in that window and a January start is realistic; buy in April and a third of the book is already spent.
