1. A recycled-content alternative at the same size

On specification this and the large YSAGi are the same object: same size to within a tenth of an inch, same PU face, same suede back. Pick on color and price rather than on features.
The recycled-content claim is the one published difference and it is worth something if the recipient cares about it. It is a maker claim, not a third-party test, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Real hide is the difference here, and it behaves differently from the polyurethane covers elsewhere on this site: it marks, it darkens, and after a year it looks like it belongs to somebody.
320 pages is a lot of journal. Combined with a full-grain cover that will outlive the paper, this is a book somebody keeps rather than fills and files.
The paper weight is published, and it is the caveat: 70 gsm is on the light side for a journal. Ballpoint and gel are fine on it; a fountain-pen user should expect show-through.

The replaceable flat eraser is the design signature and the practical argument. Every other pencil's eraser is consumed and then gone; this one is a cartridge.
A twelve-pack of pencils sounds like a joke gift until you hand it to somebody who writes in pencil. For them it is a year of supply in a box that looks like it cost more than it did.

Measure the desk before you buy the pad
This is the whole gamble on the top pick and it is avoidable. A full-size keyboard is roughly 17.5 inches wide and a mouse needs about ten inches of travel beside it, so a pad under about 30 inches wide will have the mouse running off the edge. Depth matters just as much: 15.7 inches takes a keyboard with a notebook in front of it, and 13.8 inches does not.

When an occasion pen is the right call

What to skip
- A desk pad in a size you guessed. The most likely failure on this whole list.
- An engraved pen for a non-occasion. Engraving makes the gift unreturnable and the ceremony unavoidable.
- A multi-tool pen. Stylus, level, screwdriver, ruler. It does five things adequately and writes badly.
