Questions people actually ask

Twenty of them: twelve about buying stationery gifts, eight about how this site works.

Buying a stationery gift

What is the safest stationery gift if I do not know the person well?

A gift-boxed pen. It is the only object here that assumes nothing about how somebody organizes their life - a planner assumes a system, a notebook assumes they want a blank book, a desk pad assumes you know their desk. See pens and writing gifts.

Is a paper planner a bad gift?

It is the riskiest one in this category. It assumes you know their layout, their start month, and that they have not already bought one. Run the three-question test on should you gift a planner.

How much should I spend on a coworker gift?

At or just under the stated ceiling if there is one, and 15 to 25 dollars for a peer if there is not. Going over the cap is the actual mistake - see how much to spend on a coworker gift.

What does gsm mean on notebook paper?

Grams per square meter - the weight of one sheet a meter square. Higher means heavier paper, which shows less of what is written on the reverse. 80 gsm suits gel pens and 90 suits fountain pens. Full explanation on what gsm means.

What size desk pad do I need?

About 23.6" x 13.8" for a laptop-only desk and 31.5" x 15.7" for a full keyboard with a separate mouse. The arithmetic is on the sizing guide.

Dated or undated planner?

Dated if the year starts in January and it is for yourself. Undated for a mid-year start, a restart, an academic year, and always for a gift. See dated versus undated.

What is the best pen for a planner?

A fine-point gel pen, or a fine-nib fountain pen if the paper is 80 gsm or heavier. Planner paper is often unstated in weight, which makes gel the safer choice - see pens that do not bleed through.

Dotted, lined or grid notebook?

Dotted if it is a gift. It guides handwriting like lines, supports tables like a grid, and disappears behind a sketch. It is the only ruling that is not actively wrong for any common use.

What is a good gift for a teacher?

Something on the July-to-June academic year, or a consumable. A calendar-year planner is close to useless to a teacher, and a teacher receives a lot of objects in one week. See gifts for teachers.

Are gift sets worth the money?

When the box removes work or the second item hedges a real uncertainty, yes. When the extra is an unbranded filler pen, buy the single item. See gift set versus single item.

Is Leuchtturm1917 better than Moleskine?

On paper weight and page numbering, yes - 80 gsm against 70, with printed page numbers and a contents page. Moleskine wins on recognition, which is a real thing a gift buys. The full comparison is here.

Leather or felt desk pad?

PU leather if anybody drinks at the desk, because it wipes clean. Felt if a quieter keyboard matters more. See leather versus felt.

About Ink & Indent

Have you tested these products?

No, and we say so on every page that recommends one. There is no lab, no sample cupboard and no year of use here. What we do instead is compile the published specifications, cite them, and do the arithmetic - the method is on how we pick.

Why do some picks show no price?

Because our live price data for that product is more than 48 hours old, so we hide the number rather than show you a stale one. The button still takes you to the retailer, where the current price is.

How do you make money?

We earn a commission when you buy through a link here, at no extra cost to you. It does not change the picks or their order and no brand has paid for a placement. Full statement on the affiliate disclosure.

Do you rate products out of ten?

No. A score implies a test, and we did not run one. There is no review or rating markup in this site's structured data for the same reason.

Who writes this site?

One person, described honestly as an enthusiast rather than an expert, on the about page. No certifications, no expert panel, no claimed years of experience.

Why is there no testimonials section?

Because this site launched in 2026 and has no customers to quote. An invented testimonial would be worse than an empty page, so there is no section.

How do I report a mistake?

Through the contact page, or by email. Corrections get read first, and when we fix something we say what changed - see the editorial policy.

How often is the site updated?

Prices refresh daily and carry the date they were checked. Content dates only move when the content genuinely changes - a price refresh never bumps a page's last-updated stamp.
