Numbered pages plus a printed contents page is the whole reason bullet journaling settled on this book. An index needs page numbers, and printing them saves the user writing 251 of them.
80 gsm against the Moleskine Classic's published 70 gsm is a 14 percent difference in paper weight, and it is the difference most people notice as ghosting on the reverse of a page.
Two ribbons is not decoration in a journal that has an index. One marks the index, one marks today.

90 gsm is the number to buy this for. Against 70 gsm Moleskine paper that is roughly 29 percent more paper between one page and the next, and that is where fountain-pen show-through stops being a problem.
The trade is page count. 160 pages against 251 for the Leuchtturm1917 at a similar size - heavier paper in a book of the same thickness means fewer sheets. That is physics, not a cost saving.
Ivory rather than white is a real preference axis. It is easier on the eye under a desk lamp and it flattens the contrast of a photograph, which matters if anyone is posting pages.

4. The pencil person, and the under-25 shelf

Blackwing grades by feel, not by the H-to-B scale, and the 602 is the firm end of their range. Firm means it holds a point longer, which is what you want for writing rather than shading.
The replaceable flat eraser is the design signature and the practical argument. Every other pencil's eraser is consumed and then gone; this one is a cartridge.
A twelve-pack of pencils sounds like a joke gift until you hand it to somebody who writes in pencil. For them it is a year of supply in a box that looks like it cost more than it did.

A fine nib is the right default for a gift because it is the width that works in a planner. Broad and medium nibs are lovely on letter paper and unusable in a weekly grid.
The molded grip is the Safari's most divisive feature. It forces the standard tripod hold, which is genuinely helpful for a beginner and genuinely irritating for anyone who holds a pen differently.
One cartridge is not much ink. A bottle or a pack of cartridges alongside turns this from a pen into a working setup, and costs very little.

80 gsm is the number that matters and the reason this is the pick for anyone who owns a fountain pen. Heavier paper is not automatically bleed-proof, but the gap between 80 gsm and the 70 gsm used across the Moleskine Classic line is the single most common cause of a planner that ghosts.
The second half of the book is a dotted notebook. That means the recipient does not have to carry a planner and a journal, which is the actual reason people abandon one of the two.
Two ribbons sounds trivial until you use a book with a planner section and a notes section. One ribbon in each is the whole ergonomics of it.

What it does not
- The hourly weekly grid is denser than a plain week-on-two-pages and can feel like a work tool.
- A5 is slightly taller than the Moleskine Large, so existing covers and sleeves will not fit.
Skip this: if the recipient plans in broad strokes. An hour-by-hour column grid is a meetings tool, and giving one to somebody with three appointments a week just makes the page look empty.
How these six were chosen
Three filters, applied in order. First, the maker has to publish a specification that matters - a paper weight in gsm, a nib width in millimeters, a page count. Second, the item has to be something an enthusiast would not already have three of. Third, it has to be under about eighty dollars, because this is a gift list and not a wedding registry.
That third filter is why there is no Hobonichi and no Erin Condren here. Both are excellent and neither is reliably sold on Amazon in the US, and we are not going to write a recommendation whose buy button cannot exist.
The paper weights, side by side

What not to buy for this person
- A novelty pen. They have received four. The joke lands once and the pen writes badly forever.
- A dated paper planner, unless you have seen their current one and know the layout they use. Should you gift a planner covers why.
- A giant variety pack of gel pens in twenty colors. Enthusiasts converge on two or three pens and buy those repeatedly. Breadth is a beginner's gift.
- Anything with their name laser-etched on it unless you are certain of the spelling and certain they want it. Personalization removes the option of returning it.
If you only buy one thing
Buy the Rhodia. Ninety gsm Clairefontaine paper is the single specification most likely to be better than what they currently use, it costs less than a mid-range pen, and it is not a book they will already own three of - Rhodia is the one of these three brands that is not on every high street. If they turn out to prefer their Leuchtturm, they have lost nothing; a good notebook is never wasted.

What does gsm mean on notebook paper?

Is 80 gsm enough for a fountain pen?
Usually yes for a fine nib with a dry ink, and often not for a broad wet one. Ninety gsm removes most of the doubt, which is why the Rhodia is the first pick here.
What is a safe gift for someone who already has everything?
A consumable they will use up. Good pencils, archival fineliners or a single excellent notebook get used; a fourth desk organizer does not.
Are dot grid notebooks better than lined ones?
