1. A fountain-pen user, without qualification

90 gsm is the number to buy this for. Against 70 gsm Moleskine paper that is roughly 29 percent more paper between one page and the next, and that is where fountain-pen show-through stops being a problem.
The trade is page count. 160 pages against 251 for the Leuchtturm1917 at a similar size - heavier paper in a book of the same thickness means fewer sheets. That is physics, not a cost saving.
Ivory rather than white is a real preference axis. It is easier on the eye under a desk lamp and it flattens the contrast of a photograph, which matters if anyone is posting pages.

Skip this: if the recipient keeps an indexed bullet journal. No page numbers means hand-numbering, and at 160 pages they will run out sooner than they expect.

Real hide is the difference here, and it behaves differently from the polyurethane covers elsewhere on this site: it marks, it darkens, and after a year it looks like it belongs to somebody.
320 pages is a lot of journal. Combined with a full-grain cover that will outlive the paper, this is a book somebody keeps rather than fills and files.
The paper weight is published, and it is the caveat: 70 gsm is on the light side for a journal. Ballpoint and gel are fine on it; a fountain-pen user should expect show-through.

Skip this: if the recipient writes with a fountain pen and cares about it. 70 gsm paper plus a lined-only ruling is a poor match for a wet nib; the Rhodia removes both problems.
3. A first fountain pen that is actually usable

A fine nib is the right default for a gift because it is the width that works in a planner. Broad and medium nibs are lovely on letter paper and unusable in a weekly grid.
The molded grip is the Safari's most divisive feature. It forces the standard tripod hold, which is genuinely helpful for a beginner and genuinely irritating for anyone who holds a pen differently.
One cartridge is not much ink. A bottle or a pack of cartridges alongside turns this from a pen into a working setup, and costs very little.

What it does well
- Nib width published, so you know what you are buying.
- Fine nib suits planner boxes and everyday notes.
- German-made, and a genuine entry point rather than a novelty.
What it does not
- The molded grip does not suit every hand, and the listing specifies a right-handed nib.
- Ships with a single cartridge and no converter.
Skip this: if the recipient writes on cheap office paper all day. Fountain-pen ink feathers and shows through on 70 gsm copier stock, and the pen will get blamed for the paper. See ink and bleed-through.
4. A journaler or a bullet-journal user

Pigment ink is the specification that separates these from every other fineliner in a supermarket. Dye ink fades and runs when a highlighter or a drop of water crosses it; pigment does not.
Six widths in one pack is the right shape for a gift because you do not have to guess. A bullet-journal user will find their width in the first week and buy singles of it forever after.
0.20 mm is very fine, and very fine tips are fragile. A heavy hand will flatten a 005 nib on textured paper faster than the ink runs out.

Skip this: if the recipient does not draw, letter, or bullet journal. Six technical pen widths given to somebody who just wants a pen is six times more decision than they wanted.

Numbered pages plus a printed contents page is the whole reason bullet journaling settled on this book. An index needs page numbers, and printing them saves the user writing 251 of them.
80 gsm against the Moleskine Classic's published 70 gsm is a 14 percent difference in paper weight, and it is the difference most people notice as ghosting on the reverse of a page.
Two ribbons is not decoration in a journal that has an index. One marks the index, one marks today.

6. The pencil person, and the under-25 shelf

Blackwing grades by feel, not by the H-to-B scale, and the 602 is the firm end of their range. Firm means it holds a point longer, which is what you want for writing rather than shading.
The replaceable flat eraser is the design signature and the practical argument. Every other pencil's eraser is consumed and then gone; this one is a cartridge.
A twelve-pack of pencils sounds like a joke gift until you hand it to somebody who writes in pencil. For them it is a year of supply in a box that looks like it cost more than it did.

What it does well
- Holds a point, so it suits writing rather than only sketching.
- Replaceable eraser rather than a stub that disappears.
- Sits comfortably inside a twenty-five dollar gift ceiling.
What it does not
- No H/B grade published, so a specific hardness preference cannot be matched.
- Needs a sharpener, which is not included.
Skip this: if they only write in ink. A dozen very good pencils given to a pen person is a dozen pencils in a drawer.
Paper weight is the whole gift
If you buy one thing from this page, buy heavier paper than they currently use. Gsm - grams per square meter - is published by the three notebook makers here, and the spread between them is larger than it sounds.

Note the trade in the third column, because it is physics rather than cost-cutting. A book of a given thickness holds fewer sheets when the sheets are heavier. Pigment ink versus dye ink
The second published specification worth buying on is what the ink is made of, and it decides whether their pages survive.
- Pigment ink suspends solid particles. Sakura publishes that its Pigma Micron ink is pigment based, waterproof, fade resistant and pH neutral. That means a highlighter crossing a line will not smear it and a damp thumb will not lift it.
- Dye ink, which is most gel and fountain pen ink, is soluble. It writes beautifully and it runs.
- pH neutral matters if the notebook is meant to be kept. Acidic ink and acidic paper both yellow and embrittle over decades.
For a journal somebody intends to still own in twenty years, pigment ink on acid-free paper is a genuinely better gift than a more expensive pen with dye ink in it. Ink and bleed-through covers the practical side.
A fountain pen is a bigger commitment than it looks
It is the classic writer's gift and it comes with a condition. Fountain-pen ink is wetter than anything else here, so it feathers and shows through on light paper - and most cheap notebooks and every office copier stack are light paper. Giving somebody a fountain pen and no decent notebook to use it in is giving them a frustration.
If you are buying the pen, buy the paper with it. The Rhodia at 90 gsm and a fine nib is a pairing that works out of the box, and it costs less than most single expensive pens.
What to skip
- Prompted journals, unless they asked. A book that tells somebody what to write about is a strong opinion delivered as a present.
- Anything with a quote about writing on the cover. Writers have received all of them.
- A very expensive pen for a light user. The nib does not improve the writing; it improves the object.
- Tiny pocket notebooks, unless you have seen them carry one. Most people who fill notebooks fill A5 ones.

What is the best notebook for a writer?
