What Size Desk Pad Do You Need?
Three measurements and one piece of arithmetic. Take them and this stops being a guess.

Laptop-only desk: 23.6" x 13.8". Full keyboard with a separate mouse: 31.5" x 15.7". Those two sizes cover the great majority of desks, and the rest of this page is how to check which one you are.

The usable desk width
Not the full desk - the part that is clear. Subtract anything permanent: a monitor stand's footprint, a lamp base, a dock. The pad has to fit inside what is left with a couple of inches of margin on each side, or it will be shoved up against something.

The usable desk depth
From the front edge to whatever stops you - usually the monitor stand or the back wall. This is the measurement people forget, and it is the one that decides whether a notebook fits in front of the keyboard.

The keyboard width
A full-size keyboard with a number pad is about 17.5 inches. A tenkeyless is around 14. A compact 60 percent board is about 11.5. Measure the actual one rather than guessing from the category.
The arithmetic
Keyboard width plus mousing space plus margin equals the minimum pad width. Mousing space for normal work is about ten inches; for low-sensitivity gaming it is more. Margin is about two inches so the mouse does not run off the edge during a fast movement.

That table explains why the common 31.5-inch pad exists: it is the first standard size that clears the full-size keyboard requirement with room to spare. And it explains why a 23.6-inch pad, which suits a laptop perfectly, fails the moment somebody adds a full keyboard.

Measure before you buy this. 23.6" x 13.8" is the common "small" desk pad and it is right for a laptop-only setup; it is too narrow the moment somebody adds an external keyboard and a mouse side by side.
The suede backing is the difference between a pad that stays put and a pad that creeps toward the edge every time somebody types. Double-sided leather pads look smarter and slide.
Wipe-clean is the reason this survives as a gift for a coffee drinker. A felt pad in the same spot is a stain waiting to happen.

What it does well
- The most broadly correct size if you only know they have a laptop.
- Suede back grips rather than slides.
- Wipes clean, which matters more than any other feature on a desk with a mug on it.
What it does not
- PU is not leather and will not develop a patina; it wears rather than ages.
- Too small for a full keyboard plus mouse layout.
Skip this: if they use a full-size keyboard with a separate mouse. Go to the 31.5" size instead, and read the sizing guide before you commit.
2. A full keyboard-and-mouse desk

A full-size keyboard is about 17.5" wide and a mouse needs roughly 10" of travel beside it. 31.5" covers both with an inch to spare, which is why this is the size that stops looking like a placemat.
The depth is the part people get wrong. 15.8" is enough for a keyboard plus a notebook in front of it; 13.8" is not.
Everything else - the suede back, the wipe-clean face - is identical to the smaller pad. You are buying area, not a different product.

What it does well
- Genuinely fits a keyboard and mouse without the mouse running off the edge.
- Same grippy suede backing as the smaller version.
- Covers enough desk that it reads as a finished surface rather than an accessory.
What it does not
- Overwhelms a small desk; on anything under 40 inches wide it dominates.
- Ships rolled, so it needs a day or two flat before the corners settle.
Skip this: if you have not measured their desk. A pad that overhangs the front edge gets caught by a chair arm and curls within a week.
3. A recycled-content alternative at the same size

On specification this and the large YSAGi are the same object: same size to within a tenth of an inch, same PU face, same suede back. Pick on color and price rather than on features.
The recycled-content claim is the one published difference and it is worth something if the recipient cares about it. It is a maker claim, not a third-party test, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
As with any PU pad, the failure mode is edge wear at the front lip where a forearm rests. Nothing in this class avoids that.

What it does well
- Same working size as the large YSAGi.
- Published recycled-content and FSC claims, which nothing else here states.
- Wide color range, so it can match a desk rather than fight it.
What it does not
- Recycled content is a maker claim with no independent verification cited.
- PU face wears at the front edge with heavy forearm contact.
Skip this: if the recipient wants real leather. This is polyurethane and it will never patina; a genuine hide pad is a different purchase at a different price.

That third row is why 15.7 inches is the size to buy for anybody who writes at their desk. An A5 notebook is about 8.25 inches tall; add a keyboard at roughly 5 inches deep and you need most of 15 inches to have both on the pad at once.
Common sizing mistakes
- Buying to the desk rather than to the setup. A pad that spans the whole desk looks impressive and gets pinned under a monitor stand at the back.
- Forgetting the front overhang. A pad flush with the front edge gets caught by a chair arm and curls. Leave an inch.
- Ignoring depth. Almost everybody checks width and almost nobody checks depth, and depth is what decides whether you can write on it.
- Sizing for the keyboard you own now when a new one is on the way. Keyboards change more often than desks.

Is it better to size up or down?
Down. A slightly small pad sits flat and looks deliberate; a slightly large one buckles at an edge or overhangs the front, and neither settles out.
