There is less variation in this category than the number of listings suggests. Almost every desk pad on the market is one of two materials in one of three size bands, and once you have picked a cell in that grid the remaining choice is color.

1. A full keyboard-and-mouse desk

A full-size keyboard is about 17.5" wide and a mouse needs roughly 10" of travel beside it. 31.5" covers both with an inch to spare, which is why this is the size that stops looking like a placemat.
The depth is the part people get wrong. 15.8" is enough for a keyboard plus a notebook in front of it; 13.8" is not.
Everything else - the suede back, the wipe-clean face - is identical to the smaller pad. You are buying area, not a different product.

Skip this: if you have not measured their desk. A pad that overhangs the front edge gets caught by a chair arm and curls within a week.

Measure before you buy this. 23.6" x 13.8" is the common "small" desk pad and it is right for a laptop-only setup; it is too narrow the moment somebody adds an external keyboard and a mouse side by side.
The suede backing is the difference between a pad that stays put and a pad that creeps toward the edge every time somebody types. Double-sided leather pads look smarter and slide.
Wipe-clean is the reason this survives as a gift for a coffee drinker. A felt pad in the same spot is a stain waiting to happen.

- The most broadly correct size if you only know they have a laptop.
- Suede back grips rather than slides.
- Wipes clean, which matters more than any other feature on a desk with a mug on it.
What it does not
- PU is not leather and will not develop a patina; it wears rather than ages.
- Too small for a full keyboard plus mouse layout.
Skip this: if they use a full-size keyboard with a separate mouse. Go to the 31.5" size instead, and read the sizing guide before you commit.
3. A recycled-content alternative at the same size

On specification this and the large YSAGi are the same object: same size to within a tenth of an inch, same PU face, same suede back. Pick on color and price rather than on features.
The recycled-content claim is the one published difference and it is worth something if the recipient cares about it. It is a maker claim, not a third-party test, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
As with any PU pad, the failure mode is edge wear at the front lip where a forearm rests. Nothing in this class avoids that.

Skip this: if the recipient wants real leather. This is polyurethane and it will never patina; a genuine hide pad is a different purchase at a different price.
4. A warmer desk, and a quieter one

Felt and leather are not two finishes of the same product. Felt absorbs sound, so a mechanical keyboard is measurably less irritating on it; leather reflects it.
The other half of that trade is spills. Water-resistant is not waterproof, and coffee on wool is a mark you live with. If the recipient drinks at their desk, this is the wrong material and the PU pads are the right ones.
The proportions are unusual: 33" wide by only 14" deep. That is a wide, shallow strip suited to a keyboard-forward desk, not a general work surface.

5. The budget felt option

The unstated fiber content is the honest gap here. "Industrial-grade felt" tells you the density class and nothing about whether it is wool, which is what determines whether it pills.
At 36" x 12" it is longer and shallower than the merino pad. That covers a keyboard and mouse end to end but leaves nothing in front for writing.
This is the pad to buy when the point is the look and the sound damping rather than the material story.

The two large PU pads are within a tenth of an inch of each other and share a construction. Choose between them on color and price; there is no meaningful specification difference and pretending otherwise would be inventing one.
The math that decides the size
A full-size keyboard is about 17.5 inches wide and a mouse wants roughly ten inches of travel beside it. That is 27.5 inches before any margin, which is why the 23.6-inch pads do not work for a keyboard-and-mouse setup no matter how the photography is staged.
Depth is the measurement people skip. Fifteen point seven inches takes a keyboard with a notebook in front of it; 13.8 takes the keyboard alone; twelve takes a keyboard and nothing else. The sizing guide has the full working including the desk-width check.
The backing is the difference between good and irritating
A pad that creeps toward the desk edge every time somebody types is worse than no pad, and the cause is always the backing. Both PU pads here publish a suede underside, and one maker states that this raises friction against the desk by 70 percent versus a double-sided leather pad.
That figure is the maker's own comparison rather than an independent measurement, and we are flagging it as such. What is not in doubt is the mechanism: a fabric underside grips a wooden desk and a smooth one does not.
Note the gap in the table above: the merino felt pad states no backing at all. Wool felt has enough mass to sit still on wood, and it will slide on glass. If the desk is glass, buy PU.
What to skip
- Anything double-sided with no suede or rubber underside. It looks smarter in photographs and it slides.
- A shallow strip pad if anything goes in front of the keyboard. Twelve inches of depth leaves nowhere for a notebook.
- Felt, if there is a mug on the desk. Water resistant is not waterproof and coffee on wool is permanent.
- Anything with a printed pattern. It becomes the visual center of the desk and it is not that interesting.

What is the best desk pad size?

Do desk pads stop the mouse working?
No. An optical mouse tracks fine on both PU leather and felt. Glass and highly reflective surfaces are the ones that cause problems, which is part of why a pad helps.
Is PU leather the same as leather?
No. PU is polyurethane. It wipes clean and resists spills, which real leather does not, and it never develops a patina, which real leather does.
Why does my desk pad slide?
It has no suede or rubber backing. A fabric underside grips a wooden desk; a smooth double-sided pad does not.
Can you clean a desk pad?
A PU pad wipes with a damp cloth. Felt does not - it can be brushed, and a real spill leaves a permanent mark.
