If there is a mug on the desk, buy PU leather. If there is not, and a quieter keyboard would be welcome, buy felt. Everything else about this comparison is secondary to that one question.

1. A recycled-content alternative at the same size
Aothia PU Leather Desk Pad, 31.5" x 15.7"
Effectively the same pad as the large YSAGi, with published FSC certification and recycled content.
On specification this and the large YSAGi are the same object: same size to within a tenth of an inch, same PU face, same suede back. Pick on color and price rather than on features.
The recycled-content claim is the one published difference and it is worth something if the recipient cares about it. It is a maker claim, not a third-party test, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
As with any PU pad, the failure mode is edge wear at the front lip where a forearm rests. Nothing in this class avoids that.

Skip this: if the recipient wants real leather. This is polyurethane and it will never patina; a genuine hide pad is a different purchase at a different price.

Felt and leather are not two finishes of the same product. Felt absorbs sound where PU reflects it, which is why a keyboard is quieter on this and why it feels warmer under a forearm.
The maker is plain about the other half of that trade: moisture-resistant, not waterproof, blot rather than wipe. If the recipient drinks at their desk, this is the wrong material and the PU pads are the right ones.
The proportions are unusual: 35.4" wide by only 11.8" deep. That is a long, shallow strip suited to a keyboard-forward desk, not a general work surface, and the cork underside is what keeps it from creeping.

The unstated fiber content is the honest gap here. "Industrial-grade felt" tells you the density class and nothing about whether it is wool, which is what determines whether it pills.
At 36" x 12" it is longer and shallower than the merino pad. That covers a keyboard and mouse end to end but leaves nothing in front for writing.
This is the pad to buy when the point is the look and the sound damping rather than the material story.

What it does well

Skip this: if the recipient writes on their desk pad. Twelve inches of depth leaves nowhere to put a notebook, and writing on felt is spongy anyway.
The sound difference is the real argument for felt
This is the thing photographs cannot show and the reason felt has a following. A mechanical keyboard on a bare wooden desk resonates through the desk itself; on a dense felt mat the same keyboard sounds noticeably lower and shorter. Anyone sharing a room with the typist notices before the typist does.
PU does not do this. It is a thin coating on a fabric backing and it reflects rather than absorbs.
The spill problem, stated plainly
Felt listings say water resistant, and that is accurate for a splash wiped up immediately. It is not waterproof, and a knocked-over mug is not a splash. Coffee in wool is a mark that stays, and there is no wet-cleaning route because wet-cleaning wool felt distorts it.
So the decision reduces to a risk assessment about the specific desk. If you are buying for somebody else and cannot picture their desk without a drink on it, that is your answer.
Not all felt is wool
Worth checking on any felt pad, because the listings vary in how much they tell you. One of the picks above publishes merino wool; the other says industrial-grade felt without a fiber percentage, which in practice means a synthetic or a blend.
The practical difference shows up over years rather than weeks: wool felt resists pilling, synthetic felt is more likely to bobble where a forearm rests. Neither is wrong, and the cheaper one being unspecified is not a scandal - it is just a thing you should know you are not being told.
The shapes differ too
Felt pads tend to be long and shallow - 35.4 by 11.8 inches and 36 by 12 in the two here - where PU pads are proportionally scaled at around 31.5 by 15.7. Does a felt desk mat really reduce keyboard noise?
Yes, audibly. Dense felt absorbs the impact where a bare desk or a thin PU pad reflects it. It is the main reason people choose felt.
Can you wash a felt desk pad?
No. Brush it, and spot-clean carefully. Wet-cleaning wool felt distorts it, and a real spill leaves a permanent mark.
Is wool felt better than synthetic?

Can you write on a felt desk pad?
