How to Choose a Paper Planner
Five questions in the right order. Answer them and the shortlist is usually down to two books before you have looked at a single cover.

Order matters here. Each question narrows the field enough that the next one is easier, and the last two are the ones most people start with and should finish with.
Work through these before comparing any two books

When does your year start?
January for most people, July for anyone on an academic calendar, April or October for some fiscal years. If it is not January, you want an undated book or an academic-dated one. See dated versus undated.

How many lines do you write a day?
Under six, weekly. Over twelve, daily. In between, weekly with a notes page facing. This is countable rather than a matter of temperament, which is why it belongs second. Daily versus weekly has the working.

Does it travel?
A book that goes in a bag needs to be A5 or Large. A book that lives on a desk can be letter size, and letter size is far better for hourly time blocking because the rows are tall enough to write in. Sizes explained.

What do you write with?
A ballpoint works on anything. A gel pen wants 80 gsm or more. A fountain pen wants 90 gsm or a published claim you can check. Most planner makers do not publish a weight at all, which narrows the field fast.

What does the week look like inside?
Hourly columns, horizontal day blocks, or a week with a facing notes page. This is the question everybody starts with and it is the least consequential of the five. Layouts explained.

1. The safe gift for almost anyone

144 pages across 52 weeks is roughly a spread per week and very little else. That is the point: this is a calendar with room for notes, not a system that asks the recipient to adopt a method.
The recognition matters more than the specification here. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling they have been handed homework, which is why it is the default gift and why it is the pick when you do not know their setup.
Do the arithmetic before you assume it is expensive. A 52-week dated planner used all year is a per-week cost most buyers never work out, and it is usually smaller than the coffee they bought while shopping for it.

What it does well
- January to December 2027, so it is in season for the whole gifting window and the whole year after it.
- The ruled facing page absorbs people who take notes but do not keep a separate notebook.
- Hard cover, elastic closure, and a rear pocket, so it survives a bag.
What it does not
- Moleskine does not publish a paper weight for this planner, so fountain-pen users are buying blind.
- 144 pages means no daily space at all if the recipient wants a page per day.
Skip this: if they already run a system. A dated planner is the one gift that assumes you know how somebody plans, and planner people are particular. Buy them a pen instead.
2. A pen person who takes notes

80 gsm is the number that matters and the reason this is the pick for anyone who owns a fountain pen. Heavier paper is not automatically bleed-proof, but the gap between 80 gsm and the 70 gsm used across the Moleskine Classic line is the single most common cause of a planner that ghosts.
The second half of the book is a dotted notebook. That means the recipient does not have to carry a planner and a journal, which is the actual reason people abandon one of the two.
Two ribbons sounds trivial until you use a book with a planner section and a notes section. One ribbon in each is the whole ergonomics of it.

What it does well
- Publishes its paper weight, so a pen buyer can make an informed decision instead of a hopeful one.
- Planner and dotted notebook in one hardcover, with a ribbon for each.
- Front matter carries 2026, 2027 and 2028 overviews for long-range planning.
What it does not
- The hourly weekly grid is denser than a plain week-on-two-pages and can feel like a work tool.
- A5 is slightly taller than the Moleskine Large, so existing covers and sleeves will not fit.
Skip this: if the recipient plans in broad strokes. An hour-by-hour column grid is a meetings tool, and giving one to somebody with three appointments a week just makes the page look empty.
3. The best-presented planner under most gift budgets

This is the one that punches above its price band on presentation. Three ribbons and a pen loop on an A5 hardcover is specification you normally pay considerably more for.
120 gsm again, published, which puts it in the same paper class as the Clever Fox and well above the hardcover planners that decline to state a weight.
The pen loop is worth calling out because it changes the gift. A planner with a loop invites a pen alongside it, and a planner plus a pen reads as a considered pair rather than one item.

What it does well
- 120 gsm paper in a genuinely portable A5 hardcover.
- Pen loop, so the obvious companion gift has somewhere to live.
- Undated, with monthly calendars the recipient dates themselves.
What it does not
- Bright colorways dominate the range, which narrows who it suits.
- The goal-setting sections are extensive; a pure calendar user will leave pages blank.
Skip this: if the recipient's taste is severe. The range leans decorative, and a plain black book is a safer gift for someone whose desk is all steel and gray.
The arithmetic worth doing
A dated twelve-month planner covers 52 weeks. Divide whatever it costs by 52 and you have the number that actually matters, and it is nearly always small enough to make the price question uninteresting.
The number that should concern you is the other one. A book abandoned at the end of February has been used for about nine weeks, so its real cost per week of use is roughly six times higher than the same book carried all year. Every question above is aimed at that outcome rather than at the sticker price.
The specification most people never check
Paper weight, and it is worth being blunt about how uneven the disclosure is. In our comparison set, the notebook brands publish gsm almost universally and the planner brands mostly do not. Where a maker does publish, it is generally because the number is good.

Absence of a figure is not proof of bad paper. It is proof that you are buying without information, which is a different thing and worth knowing you are doing.
Three things that do not matter as much as they seem to
- The cover material. Eco-leather, hardcover and softcover all survive a year. This is aesthetics, and aesthetics are fine - just do not let them outrank the paper.
- Sticker sheets. They come with almost everything now. Nobody has ever kept a planner because of stickers.
- The goal-setting front matter. Vision pages and quarterly reviews are used enthusiastically in January by a small fraction of buyers. If you like them, good; if you do not, you are paying for pages you will skip.

What size planner should I buy?
A5 or Large if it goes in a bag. Letter size only if it lives on a desk - it is much better for hourly time blocking because the rows are tall enough to write in.
How much should I spend on a paper planner?
Divide by 52 weeks and the price stops being the interesting number. The expensive outcome is abandonment: a book left in February costs about six times more per week of use.
Does paper weight matter in a planner?
It decides whether your pen shows through. Ballpoints are fine anywhere; gel wants 80 gsm or more; fountain pens want 90. Most planner makers do not publish the figure.
What is the most forgiving planner layout?
Weekly with a facing notes page. Light writers are not confronted with blank space and heavy writers have somewhere to overflow.
