The answer first
Count the lines you write on an average day. Under about six, buy weekly. Over about twelve, buy daily. Between the two, buy weekly with a facing notes page. That is the whole decision, and it beats any amount of thinking about what kind of planner person you are.
The two failure modes
Each layout fails in a specific and predictable way, and knowing which failure you would rather have is the fastest route to a decision.

Of the two, the second is the more recoverable. A cramped weekly spread can be extended into a facing notes page or a separate notebook. A daily book with 300 empty pages cannot be shrunk.

The failure mode of a daily planner is blank pages. If the recipient writes three lines a day, a daily layout gives them 362 pages of visible guilt. If they write fifteen, a weekly spread runs out by Wednesday.

What it does well

144 pages across 52 weeks is roughly a spread per week and very little else. That is the point: this is a calendar with room for notes, not a system that asks the recipient to adopt a method.
The recognition matters more than the specification here. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling they have been handed homework, which is why it is the default gift and why it is the pick when you do not know their setup.
Do the arithmetic before you assume it is expensive. A 52-week dated planner used all year is a per-week cost most buyers never work out, and it is usually smaller than the coffee they bought while shopping for it.

What it does well

Ninety days is roughly a season, and that is the honest unit for anyone whose relationship with planners has historically ended in February. A year-long book that gets abandoned in week six is a year-long reminder of that; a 90-day book that gets abandoned in week six was always going to end anyway.
The spiral binding is the underrated part. It folds flat and folds back, so it takes up half a desk instead of a whole one, and it stays open while you write.
The hourly column is a scaffolding device. If the recipient struggles to start tasks rather than to remember them, an hour grid is more useful than a to-do list, because it forces a when as well as a what.

Four hundred pages against 144 is the entire difference, and it is a difference in commitment rather than in quality. It is also the difference between a book that lives in a bag and one that mostly lives on a desk.
The third option: weekly with a notes page
Most people who think they need a daily layout actually need a weekly one with somewhere to overflow into. The standard weekly-with-facing-notes design does exactly this: the week's appointments on the left, a ruled or dotted page on the right for whatever will not fit.

Hybrid approaches that work
- Weekly planner plus a separate notebook. Two objects, but the notebook never runs out and the planner stays slim. This is what most heavy writers converge on.

- A 90-day daily book. Full daily pages without the twelve-month commitment, which is a genuinely underrated middle position.
