Paper Planners

Are Moleskine Planners Worth It? It Depends Who Is Writing In It

The planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling handed homework. Here is what Moleskine publishes about the paper, the layout and the dating, and the one buyer it is reliably wrong for.

The short version

Worth it as a gift, and a compromise as a working planner. Buy the 12-month dated weekly, Large, if you are buying for somebody else. Week on the left, ruled notes on the right, a cover they will recognize before they open it, and 144 pages that ask them to adopt nothing.

Skip it if they run a system already, and skip it if they write with a fountain pen - Moleskine publishes 70 gsm, the lightest paper of any planner on this site, and a wet nib will show through. If the paper is the priority, the LEUCHTTURM1917 2027 weekly publishes 80 gsm instead.

What the listings state for the Moleskine Classic 12-month planners, Large

Two of those three say not stated for paper weight, and that is worth noticing. Moleskine now publishes 70 gsm on the dated weekly listing - a real improvement on withholding it - but the undated and daily listings still do not, so a buyer choosing between them cannot compare the one specification that matters most.

144 pages across 52 weeks is roughly a spread per week and very little else. That is the point: this is a calendar with room for notes, not a system that asks the recipient to adopt a method.

The recognition matters more than the specification here. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can receive without feeling they have been handed homework, which is why it is the default gift and why it is the pick when you do not know their setup.

Do the arithmetic before you assume it is expensive. A 52-week dated planner used all year is a per-week cost most buyers never work out, and it is usually smaller than the coffee they bought while shopping for it.

What it does well

  • January to December 2027, so it is in season for the whole gifting window and the whole year after it.
  • The ruled facing page absorbs people who take notes but do not keep a separate notebook.
  • Hard cover, elastic closure, and a rear pocket, so it survives a bag.

What it does not

  • 70 gsm is the lightest paper of any planner on this site, so a fountain pen or a heavy highlighter will show through to the next page.
  • 144 pages means no daily space at all if the recipient wants a page per day.

Skip this: if they already run a system. A dated planner is the one gift that assumes you know how somebody plans, and planner people are particular. Buy them a pen instead.

#ad Price as of October 18, 2026. How this is funded

A dated planner given in December has a deadline attached to it. If the recipient does not start on January 1 they are already behind, and if they already bought their own for 2027 your gift is dead on arrival.

Undated removes both problems at once. It also removes the one thing a dated planner does for free, which is the dates, so somebody has to write twelve months of them in.

This is the pick when you are buying for a person whose planning year does not start in January - teachers, students, anyone on a fiscal or academic calendar.

What it does well

  • Cannot be made obsolete by the calendar, so it is safe to buy early and safe to give late.
  • Does not collide with a planner they may have already bought for the year.
  • Same familiar Moleskine object, so the gift still reads as a gift.

What it does not

  • Somebody has to hand-write the dates, and some people find that a chore rather than a feature.
  • No public paper weight.

Skip this: if the recipient is the sort of person who wants everything printed for them. Undated planners reward people who like filling things in, and irritate everyone else.

Moleskine Classic 12-Month 2027 Daily Planner, Large

3. Someone who writes a lot every day

Moleskine Classic 12-Month 2027 Daily Planner, Large

A full page per day, 400 pages of it, for the person whose weekly planner is always overflowing.

$31.00 - View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 18, 2026. How this is funded

400 pages against the weekly edition's 144 is the entire difference between these two books, and it is a difference in commitment rather than quality. A page a day is roughly 2.7 times the paper and a noticeably thicker block in the hand.

The failure mode of a daily planner is blank pages. If the recipient writes three lines a day, a daily layout gives them 362 pages of visible guilt. If they write fifteen, a weekly spread runs out by Wednesday.

This is the safer buy when you have actually seen them write, and the riskier one when you have not.

What it does well

  • A genuine full page per day, which almost no planner at this price offers.
  • Same dated 2027 range and same cover language as the weekly, so it reads as a considered upgrade.
  • Thick enough to double as the only book they carry.

What it does not

  • Heavy and bulky compared with the weekly edition.
  • Punishing to use if the recipient does not write daily.
  • No published paper weight, same as the rest of the range.

Skip this: if you have never seen how much they actually write. A daily page is a commitment device, and gifting a commitment device to someone who did not ask for one lands badly.

LEUCHTTURM1917 Weekly Planner & Notebook 2027, A5, Dotted

4. A pen person who takes notes

LEUCHTTURM1917 Weekly Planner & Notebook 2027, A5, Dotted

80 gsm paper and a dotted notebook bound into the back, which is the combination fountain-pen users actually ask for.

$28.93 - View on Amazon

#ad Price as of October 18, 2026. How this is funded

80 gsm is the number that matters and the reason this is the pick for anyone who owns a fountain pen. Heavier paper is not automatically bleed-proof, but the gap between 80 gsm and the 70 gsm used across the Moleskine Classic line is the single most common cause of a planner that ghosts.

The second half of the book is a dotted notebook. That means the recipient does not have to carry a planner and a journal, which is the actual reason people abandon one of the two.

Two ribbons sounds trivial until you use a book with a planner section and a notes section. One ribbon in each is the whole ergonomics of it.

ExtrasTwo bookmarks, a folding rear pocket, and archival label stickersSource: Amazon listing - LEUCHTTURM1917 Weekly Planner & Notebook 2027 A5

What it does well

  • Publishes its paper weight, so a pen buyer can make an informed decision instead of a hopeful one.
  • Planner and dotted notebook in one hardcover, with a ribbon for each.
  • Front matter carries 2026, 2027 and 2028 overviews for long-range planning.

What it does not

  • The hourly weekly grid is denser than a plain week-on-two-pages and can feel like a work tool.
  • A5 is slightly taller than the Moleskine Large, so existing covers and sleeves will not fit.

Skip this: if the recipient plans in broad strokes. An hour-by-hour column grid is a meetings tool, and giving one to somebody with three appointments a week just makes the page look empty.

70 gsm is the honest problem

Seventy gsm is light. For a ballpoint it is fine. For a gel pen it ghosts, for a fountain pen it shows through properly, and a heavy highlighter will mark the next page. That is the single biggest practical difference between a Moleskine planner and the alternatives, and it is now published rather than left to be discovered.

The comparison that matters: the LEUCHTTURM1917 2027 weekly publishes 80 gsm, and the undated goal planners at the premium end of this category publish 120 gsm. Ten grams does not sound like much and it is the difference between a page you can write on both sides of and one you cannot. What gsm means on notebook paper explains the scale, and pens that do not bleed through planner paper is the page to read if the planner is already bought.

144 pages is a calendar with notes, not a system

One hundred and forty-four pages across fifty-two weeks is roughly a spread per week and very little else. There is no habit tracker, no goal framework, no monthly review spread and no instructions.

That is the point rather than an omission. A Moleskine is the one planner a non-planner-person can be given without feeling they have been handed homework, which is exactly why it is the default gift and why it is the right pick when you do not know how somebody organizes anything. If you want a system instead, Clever Fox vs Panda Planner compares the two that provide one.

The ruled facing page is the quietly useful part. It absorbs the people who take notes in meetings but do not keep a separate notebook, which is most people, and it is why the weekly outsells the daily by a distance.

Which of the three to buy

  • Dated weekly, if it is a gift and you are buying it in season. January to December 2027 means it is current for the whole gifting window and the year after. The risk is that they already bought their own.
  • Undated weekly, if you are buying early, buying late, or buying for somebody on an academic or fiscal year. It cannot be made obsolete by the calendar and it cannot collide with a planner they already own. The cost is that somebody has to write twelve months of dates in by hand.
  • Dated daily, only if you know they want a page per day. It is a much thicker book and a much bigger commitment, and a page a day is a lot of blank space for somebody who does not already fill one. Daily or weekly works through that decision honestly.

The undated version is the underrated one for gifting, and the reason is timing. A dated planner given in December has a deadline attached: if the recipient does not start on January 1 they are already behind. Dated or undated covers the trade properly.

Where it is beaten

  • On paper, by the LEUCHTTURM1917 2027 weekly at a published 80 gsm, and by the undated goal planners at 120 gsm. This is the one that will actually affect daily use.
  • On structure, by any of the undated goal planners, which provide a method rather than a grid. That is an advantage only if the recipient wants one.
  • On published specification generally. Two of the three Moleskine planner listings here do not state a paper weight at all, while LEUCHTTURM1917 states its own.
  • On price per week, by cheaper dated planners that do the same job less attractively. You are paying something for the cover and the recognition, and the page should say so.

Who each pick is for

  • Moleskine 2027 dated weekly - best for giving to somebody whose system you do not know. Recognizable, in season, week-plus-notes layout, hard cover and a rear pocket. Honest downside: 70 gsm is the lightest paper here, and a dated book assumes they have not already bought one.
  • Moleskine undated weekly - best for gifting without a deadline attached. Cannot go out of date, cannot collide with their own purchase, same familiar object. Honest downside: somebody has to hand-write a year of dates, and the listing publishes no paper weight.
  • Moleskine 2027 dated daily - best for somebody who genuinely writes a page a day. Far more space, same recognizable cover. Honest downside: a thick book and a large commitment, and no published paper weight.
  • LEUCHTTURM1917 2027 weekly - best when the paper matters more than the cover. 80 gsm published, A5, dotted, and a planner-notebook hybrid. Honest downside: less instantly recognizable as a gift, and it asks slightly more of the recipient.

Do the arithmetic before you call it expensive

A dated planner used all year is a per-week cost almost nobody works out. Divide the price by fifty-two and it is a small number - usually smaller than the coffee bought while shopping for it.

That framing only holds if it gets used all year, which brings the argument back to the recipient rather than the book. A planner abandoned in March is expensive at any price, which is why should you gift a planner is the honest page to read before this one.

Questions people actually ask

Are Moleskine planners worth it?

As a gift, yes - the recognition and the week-plus-notes layout make it the planner somebody can receive without feeling handed a system. As a working planner it is a compromise, because the dated weekly publishes 70 gsm, the lightest paper of any planner on this site.

What paper weight is a Moleskine planner?

The 2027 dated weekly, Large, publishes 70 gsm acid-free ivory stock. The undated weekly and the dated daily listings do not state a paper weight at all, so those two cannot be compared on the specification that matters most.

Can you use a fountain pen in a Moleskine planner?

You can, but at 70 gsm expect show-through and probably some strike-through on the dated weekly. If the recipient writes with a fountain pen, the LEUCHTTURM1917 2027 weekly publishes 80 gsm and is the better buy - see notebooks for fountain pens.

Should I buy the dated or undated Moleskine planner?

Dated if you are buying in season and know they have not bought their own. Undated if you are buying early or late, or for a teacher, student or anyone whose year does not start in January - it cannot be made obsolete. See dated or undated.

How many pages is a Moleskine weekly planner?

144 pages in the Large 12-month dated weekly, which is roughly a spread per week with a ruled notes page facing each one. The daily version is a page per day and is a considerably thicker book.

Moleskine or Leuchtturm1917 planner?

Moleskine for recognition and for a gift; Leuchtturm1917 for paper, because it publishes 80 gsm against Moleskine's 70. See Leuchtturm1917 vs Moleskine for how the same split plays out across their notebooks.
