How we judged these, before any ranking
Almost every list of left-handed pens is really a list of grips. Grips are close to irrelevant here. The hand smears because it passes over wet ink, so the ranking runs on how quickly the ink stops being wet, and on what each maker is willing to state about it.
- Ink chemistry first. Ballpoint ink is an oil-based paste that sets on the surface almost immediately. Gel ink is water-based and sits wet longer. Pigment and fountain-pen inks sit wettest of all. That ordering does more work than any other factor here.
- Whether the maker makes a drying claim, and how specific it is. A pen sold on drying speed was designed for this problem. A pen whose maker says nothing was not. Where a claim exists below, it is quoted as the maker's words, because this site has not timed any of them.
- Point size. A narrower tip lays down less ink, and less ink dries faster. It is the cheapest fix available and the one most often skipped.
- Whether the barrel forces a hold. Molded grip sections are shaped for a right hand. A plain round barrel lets an underwriter or an overwriter hold the pen the way they actually hold it.
What is not a criterion: 'left-handed' printed on the packaging. Two of the picks below carry no such label and outperform pens that do, because ink type beats marketing every time.

The paper is doing half of this to you
Heavy, closed, expensive paper is the enemy of a left hand, and this is the one place on the site where the usual advice inverts. Paper that keeps ink sitting on the surface is paper that keeps ink wet under your palm for longer.

Fountain pens, honestly
A fountain pen is the hardest instrument on this site for a left-handed writer, and no pen recommendation fixes that. The ink is wet, it dries by evaporation, and an underwriting hand drags through it. The nib is a second problem: nibs are ground for a right-handed angle of attack, and a left hand that pushes rather than pulls can catch the tines.

Two adjustments worth more than any pen
Rotating the paper clockwise so the line runs away from the hand is the single change that removes the most smearing, and it costs nothing. Most left-handed writers who do not smear are doing this without having been told to.
