A dated planner given in December has a deadline attached to it. If the recipient does not start on January 1 they are already behind, and if they already bought their own for 2027 your gift is dead on arrival.
Undated removes both problems at once. It also removes the one thing a dated planner does for free, which is the dates, so somebody has to write twelve months of them in.
This is the pick when you are buying for a person whose planning year does not start in January - teachers, students, anyone on a fiscal or academic calendar.

When the planner is the right call
Three cases, and they are narrower than the volume of planner gift guides would suggest.
- They said they want to start planning on paper. Stated intent is completely different from assumed intent, and the fact they have not bought one is the reason to buy it for them.
- You have seen the book they use and can name it. Then you are buying a replacement rather than making a proposal, and a replacement is a good gift.
- They are a teacher or a student. The academic-year planner is a specific, hard-to-get-wrong object, because the date range is the whole point and you already know it. See paper planners for teachers.
The middle option almost nobody buys
An undated planner sits precisely between the two and removes most of the planner's downside while keeping its structure. It cannot expire, it cannot duplicate the dated book they already bought, and it starts the day they open it.
The cost is that somebody writes twelve months of dates in by hand, which some people enjoy and others find tedious. If you know they are the sort of person who likes filling things in, an undated planner is the best of both objects. If you buy the notebook, buy on paper weight
The one specification that separates a notebook they use from one they abandon is the paper, and unlike layout it is published. Eighty gsm and up handles a gel pen without ghosting; seventy does not always. Ninety handles a fountain pen.
That is a checkable number rather than a guess about taste, which is exactly what makes the notebook the safer gift. Paper and ghosting has the detail, and notebooks and journals has the picks.
